Volunteer in Vietnam | Projects &
general information
Have you thought about volunteering in Vietnam for a while,
but need some information to make a final decision? If you are looking for a
place full of culture, great beaches, awesome weather and tasty cuisine, then
you need to volunteer in Vietnam! In the past Vietnam has struggled with high
levels of poverty but is now considered a middle-income country. Still, they
have a lot to do to battle problems like corruption, economic inequality, and
improving government policies.
Volunteer projects in Vietnam
Before you decide to volunteer in Vietnam, you should think
about what you expect from a project. Whether you'd like to work with children
or animals, in the city or in remote areas, there is something for everybody.
We show you lots of volunteering opportunities in Vietnam to help you find the
right project for you.
Support conservation projects
The country has to deal with many environmental issues due
to the effects of the Vietnam War. Another problem that affects the environment
is the country's rapid industrial growth. Vietnam faces problems with land
degradation, as well as forest degradation. Other problems are the massive
pollution and improper management of waste in cities like Hoh Chi Minh City or
Hanoi. Volunteers who work in this field will support reforestation efforts, plant
new trees and conduct research. Conservation volunteers could also work on
organic farms and protect endangered areas from destruction.
Assist in health care projects
The general quality of health in Vietnam is good but there
is a constant struggle with poverty and inequalities. That's why malnutrition
is still a common phenomenon in the country. The government can only subsidize
around 20% of health care expenses; the individuals need to pay the rest
themselves. Almost half of the population has no access to clean water,
especially those outside the city. This promotes infectious diseases such as
malaria, dengue, typhoid, cholera, and others. Volunteers working in health
care will shadow and support doctors and nurses with their daily tasks. Depending
on the previous knowledge, volunteers might be able to assist during more
complex treatments.
Join an education project as a teaching volunteer
Primary education is compulsory in the country, and this has
helped to the country's high level of literacy. The literacy rate is around
90.3% (and can reach 94% among children). As a teaching volunteer you will be
working with children at different ages and support them at school. You might
teach them English, help them with their homework or create after school activities.
If you have good skills in mathematics, IT or other subjects, you can teach
them to the children as well. You can chose if you'd like to work for a project
in the city or in rural areas.
General project requirements
You need to be at least 18 years old for most of the
volunteer projects. Get in contact with the local project manager to ask for
volunteering opportunities for minors.
You need to have basic English skills to join a volunteer
project in Vietnam.
Depending on the project you're interested in, you might
need to provide a criminal background check and a health declaration.

Education
in Vietnam
“Education
is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world".
In
the suburban and the rural area in Vietnam, the learning outcomes of Vietnamese
children show little progress. Sometimes, they do not have any motivation to
acquire knowledge.
After graduating from high school, almost all of the students who do not pass the exam are primarily trades people or street vendors, selling clothing and a myriad of other items in the market places or cooked food on the streets because of the shortage of life skills. The fact is that a number of their parents are rice farmers in the rural areas. Their work also includes caring for draft animals (such as water buffaloes, which are used for pulling carts and plows), fishing, repairing equipments and helping to clear gardens. Therefore, they do not have time for their children in order to give them a good orientation for the future. They would like their children to stay at home to earn money as soon as possible and get married..
In addition, many students graduating from university cannot find a good job although they have good experiences in specialized skills. The reason is that they cannot speak English after learning English for 5 years or even 10 years at school. The vast majority of Vietnamese students are good at grammar without speaking. Communicating with the foreigners is the barrier.
To change their mind and help them becoming global citizens, we join hands to create an English speaking environment for all people in the suburban parts of Hanoi and provinces around with free and low-cost classes. Attending these programs, students have good opportunities to exchange the culture, learn English and new life skills.

Join your hands to break the fear of learning English.
· Bring a bright future to all people especially children from the rural areas in Hanoi.
· Given the condition of our rural elementary schools, volunteers will be providing valuable support to overburdened teachers.
· The volunteers’ objective should not be to teach the intricacies of grammar; this is something the children can get from their textbook. The volunteer’s objective should be to motivate the children to learn English. As educators are aware, students can best be engaged when lessons are organized, relevant, challenging, interesting, interactive, and also when the instructor is enthusiastic, empathic, and encouraging.

English Teaching
Guide
This is your opportunity to support Vietnam's education, a
topic which is recently becoming increasingly more important in this unique
country.
Education is becoming an increasingly important issue in
Vietnam. Traditionally, agriculture has provided jobs for the masses, but this
sector’s growth has plummeted. Nowadays, international commercial trade governs
the Vietnamese economy, especially in major cities such as Hanoi. This economic
shift has created a greater demand for skilled labour and particularly a
workforce that is multilingual with English being the main language required.
In recent years, access to primary and secondary education
has risen significantly and schools have received increased levels of funding.
Furthermore, there is a greater focus on physical, psychological, social and
emotional growth, alongside general educational achievement. English language
training was introduced into the national curriculum in 2010 as the government
continues to recognise the importance of the ability to speak English to young
people.
Homestay Nong Nghiep support
community education classes for the local community.
English language skills are of growing importance at the
school. However, the local teachers tend to focus on teaching listening,
reading and writing skills and do not focus on speaking and communicational
skills, as this is an area they are often limited in themselves. Our aim is to
create an environment within the classrooms that encourages the pupils to
practice their English and improve their confidence. We encourage volunteers to
keep the lessons fun. Adding games, songs, music etc to the lessons will
encourage the students to engage and improve their confidence. If willing,
volunteers can also spend time helping improve the English of the teaching
staff. This helps bring about long development at the school.
If you have a specific type of placement you’re interested
in then please let us know in your application. However, if you do not outline
a preference then we will place you where the need is greatest at the time.
Regardless of your background or placement, our local team will give you a
comprehensive introduction to the project and what is expected of you.
Therefore, it is not an issue if you have little to no teaching experience.
We encourage volunteers to prepare as much as possible for
their teaching programme overseas.
ESSENTIAL PROGRAMME INFORMATION
For the majority of our programmes you can apply at any
time. However, we advise that you apply as soon as possible to ensure we have
availability on the programme as spaces can fill up very quickly during this
period.
It is best that you apply sooner rather than later as some
of our programmes only have a limited capacity and spaces get filled very
quickly.
